At the 2024 NFVA Annual Meeting on Oct. 10, members voted on a bylaws change and elect a new member to the board of directors:
Bylaws change. Article VII, section 2, currently states, "Each Officer will be elected for a term of two years and each Director will be elected for a term of five years and will be eligible for re-election upon completion of that term." The proposed change would reduce the term of each Director from five to three years:
Board election. The members will be asked to elect Ruth McLaughlin to the board of directors. She will replace outgoing board member Priscilla Geraghty. A Falmouth native who grew up in Hatchville, attended Falmouth schools, and has lived in North Falmouth for 30 years, Ruth recently retired from running the Cape and Islands Public Defender’s Office. She has also been a volunteer on the NFVA's Beautification Team, helping with local landscaping efforts, and wants to "continue to see our community grow and more forward."
This year's Annual Meeting took place Thursday, Oct. 10, at the North Falmouth Congregational Church, 155 Old Main Road. Along with a buffet dinner, it featured a talk by Susan Baur, co-founder of the Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage. Â Since it was formed in 2017, OLAUG has been gathering small teams of swimmers, ages 64 to 85, to clean up ponds from Falmouth to Chatham. Co-founder Susan Baur will describe the group's efforts to sweep along the shallows and dive down to pick up beer cans, golf balls, fishing lures, waterlogged dog toys, hats, jackets, shoes, and occasionally a tire, cell phone, or box of spent fireworks.
