The North Falmouth Village Association's Annual Meeting & Dinner will take place Oct. 9, 6 to 8 p.m., in a new venue—the Daily Brew coffeehouse and lounge, now at the former site of the Silver Lounge on North Falmouth Highway. The evening will feature a talk on sharks as well as the nomination of two new association co-presidents:

• Ilene Karnow of North Hill, whose longtime involvement in the association has included leading its Community Outreach events, helping with local plantings, leading the weekly Mah Jongg gatherings, and spearheading the drive to restore the Village Junction building and celebrate its historical roots. She became a board director in 2023.

• Ruth McLaughlin, who joined the board in 2024, previously helped with local landscaping projects as part of the association's Garden Club team. Retired from running the Cape and Island Public Defender's Office, she grew up in Hatchville, attended the Falmouth school system, and has lived on Wild Harbor Road for more than three decades.

Held each October, the Annual Meeting offers NFVA members a chance to join together as a community for a festive dinner and the opportunity to hear about the association's latest initiatives. It also often features a guest performer or speaker, which this year will be scientist John Chisholm of the New England Aquarium.

An adjunct scientist with the aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life, Chisholm has been documenting the occurrence of white sharks in the Atlantic since the late 1970s and has been able to identify over 500 individual sharks, from Canada to Florida, by their natural markings. In addition to white sharks, his research has focused on the natural history and conservation of other New England shark species, including spiny dogfish, sand tiger, porbeagle, and basking sharks.

Tickets for the Annual Meeting are available to all NFVA members at a cost of $20 person. (Children under 12 can attend for free.) There will be a cash bar.

About the Daily Brew

After opening in Cataumet in 2006, the Daily Brew quickly became a local hub renowned for its coffee, baked goods, sandwiches, and, most of all, community atmosphere. ("We serve the salty natives and washashores alike," its website says.) This year it moved to the site of the Silver Lounge, 412 North Falmouth Highway. In addition to a coffeehouse, it now has a lounge which can accommodate special events and also features live music performances. Learn more at thedailybrew.com.
